Arabic
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Relative adjective (nisba) composed of مُحَمَّد بِن نُصَيْر (muḥammad bin nuṣayr, “Muhammad ibn Nusayr”) + ـِيّ (-iyy).
Adjective
[edit]نُصَيْرِيّ • (nuṣayriyy) (feminine نُصَيْرِيَّة (nuṣayriyya), masculine plural نُصَيْرِيُّونَ (nuṣayriyyūna), feminine plural نُصَيْرِيَّات (nuṣayriyyāt))
- (obsolete) an Alawite, a member of a syncretic Shia sect concentrated in Latakia and Tartus governorates in Syria
- (Islam, religious slur) a Nusayri, an Alawite
Usage notes
[edit]In 1920s the term عَلَوِيّ (ʕalawiyy) became more common for self-identification among Alawites. Now the word "Nusayri" is used only by the critics of the sect, especially by groups like the Islamic State or Jabhat an-Nusra during the Syrian Civil war.
