Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Iranian *maič- (to suck), which has no clear Indo-European etymology. Cognate with Persian مکیدن (mekidan, to suck, absorb), probably a loanward from Northwestern Iranian, and مزیدن (mazidan, to taste).
