Arabic
[edit]Etymology 1
[edit]From the root ط م ر (ṭ-m-r). Deemed by Fraenkel to reek of Classical Syriac ܡܰܛܡܽܘܪܬܳܐ (maṭmūrtā, “pit for hiding treasures”) from ܛܡܰܪ (ṭmar, “to bury; to hide, to abscond”) by reason of the Arabic root missing the meaning “to store” in the old poetry, and indeed from what the web databases of Qaṣāʾid and ʾAḥādīṯ return by 2019 طَمَرَ (ṭamara, “to bury, to hide”) is absent. Compare against Akkadian 𒋼𒈨𒊒 (temēru, tamāru, “to bury, to conceal”).
Noun
[edit]مَطْمُورة • (maṭmūra) f (plural مَطَامِير (maṭāmīr) or مَطْمُورَات (maṭmūrāt))
- underground storage room dug to preserve foodstuff, a granary, subterranean silo
