Etymology

Derived from the passive participle of the verb خَمَّسَ (ḵammasa). Cognate to Assyrian Neo-Aramaic ܡܚܘܡܫܐ (mḥwmšā) and Hebrew מְחֻמָּשׁ (mekhumásh).
