The sense of "anal sex" derives directly from لُوط (lūṭ, Lot), with the meaning of "to do as Lot's people did", and was subsequently leveled to the root by analogy. For formation, compare English sodomize.

Verb

[edit]

لَاطَ (lāṭa) I (non-past يَلُوطُ (yalūṭu), verbal noun لَوْط (lawṭ) or لِوَاط (liwāṭ))

  1. (intransitive, Islam, derogatory, dated) to have anal sex [with بِ (bi) ‘with a man’], to sodomize
Hypernyms: (largely euphemistic, archaic) بَاشَر (bāšar), (vulgar) نَاكَ (nāka)
Usage notes
[edit]
  • Because the verb derives from the name of the Islamic figure himself (unlike English sodomize, which derives from the biblical name of the city), some have come to scruple about or even vehemently denounce the use of words thus derived to refer to homosexual intercourse, instead favoring euphemistic terms and expressions.
  • All the other uses of the verb are completely obsolete, as the form has come to be associated solely with sodomy.
