[edit]From Classical Syriac ܟܘܪܚܐ (kurḥā, “monk’s cell”), ultimately from Akkadian 𒆠𒅕𒄷 (kirḫu, “acropolis, inner sanctum; an enclosed part of a temple sanctuary with restricted access outside of the priestly class”).
