[edit]From كِتَابَة (kitāba, “writing”), verbal noun of كَتَبَ (kataba, “to write”) + اَل (al-, “the”) + رَسَائِل (rasāʔil, “epistles”), plural of رِسَالَة (risāla, “epistle”), connected with رَاسَلَ (rāsala, “to correspond”), from the root ر س ل (r-s-l).
