[edit]Calque of Arabic مذنب (“comet”, literally “long-tailed”) or Persian اختر دنبالهدار (“comet”, literally “tailed star”); by surface analysis, from قویروقلو (kuyruklu, “tailed”) + یلدز (yıldız, “star”).
