[edit]Borrowed from Greek κουκουβάγια (koukouvágia, “owl”), a word of onomatopoeic origin; compare Albanian kukuvajkë, Bulgarian кукумявка (kukumjavka), Italian coccoveggia and Romanian cucuvea.
