[edit]Likely related to or from a metathesis of Classical Syriac ܩܠܡܐܿ (qlmʾ), itself from Aramaic כלמה, from Akkadian 𒄴 (kalmatu, “insect, bug”); cognate to ك ل م (k-l-m) in the sense of biting.
