[edit]Ultimately reportedly from the name of an island in the Indian Ocean. Compare French calambac, calambouc, Spanish calambac, Portuguese calambá, calambaque, Italian calambà, calambucco, Venetan canabuco, all ultimately from Malay kalambaq. For sense 2 compare Albanian kallamboq, Greek καλαμπόκι (kalampóki), Romanian călămbuc, Aromanian cãlãmbuchi.
