Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Turkic *kïrk- (to shear; to scrape); cognate with Azerbaijani qırxmaq, Bashkir ҡырҡыу (qırqıw), Kazakh қырқу (qyrqu), Kyrgyz кыркуу (kırkuu), Turkmen gyrkmak and Uzbek qirqmaq. Compare also Mongolian хяргах (xjargax, to cut, shear) and Dongxiang ghigva (to cut), both borrowings from Turkic.
