From Coptic ⲅⲩⲡⲧⲓⲟⲥ (guptios, “Egyptian”), ⲕⲩⲡⲧⲁⲓⲟⲥ (kuptaios, “Egyptian”), from Late Ancient Greek Αἰγύπτιος (Aigúptios), from earlier Αἴγυπτος (Aíguptos), from Egyptian ḥwt-kꜣ-ptḥ.

And the progeny of Shem are the Arabs, Persia and Byzantium, and there is good in them; the progeny of Japheth are Gog and Magog, the Turks and the Slavs, and there is no good in them, and the progeny of Ham are the Egyptians and the Berbers, and there is no good in them.'"

     قالوا: وقتل الله عز وجل في تلك الليلة أبكار القبط، وأبكار دوابهم ليشتغلوا عنهم، وخرج بنو إسرائيل حين انتصف النهار، وأهل مصر في مناحة عظيمة على أبكار أولادهم وأبكار أموالهم، ليس من بيت إلا وفيه عويل، وحين جاء الوحي إلى موسى خرجوا مسرعين، فحملوا العجين قبل اختماره، وحملوا الأزواد في الأردية، وألقوها على عواتقهم.

     They say that God — mighty and dignified — killed on that night the firstborn of the Egyptians and the firstborn of their beasts, so as to be distracted from them, while the Children of Israel went out at midday. And the people of Egypt were in such great grief over the firstborn of their children and the firstborn of their chattel that there was not a single house without wailing therein. And when the revelation came to Moses they went out hurrying, as they loaded the dough before it became fermented and loaded the traveling-provisions in drapery and threw it over their shoulders.
