فِلْو or فَلُوّ or فُلُوّ (filw or faluww or fuluwwm (plural أَفْلَاء (ʔaflāʔ) or فَلَاوَى (falāwā) or فِلَاء (filāʔ))

  1. foal, colt (a preadult horse or ass which has been weaned)
    • 7th century CE, Muwaṭṭaʾ Mālik, section 58:
      مَنْ تَصَدَّقَ بِصَدَقَةٍ مِنْ كَسْبٍ طَيِّبٍ - وَلَا يَقْبَلُ اللَّهُ إِلَّا طَيِّبًا - كَانَ إِنَّمَا يَضَعُهَا فِي كَفِّ الرَّحْمَنِ يُرَبِّيهَا كَمَا يُرَبِّي أَحَدُكُمْ فَلُوَّهُ أَوْ فَصِيلَهُ حَتَّى تَكُونَ مِثْلَ الْجَبَلِ.
      man taṣaddaqa biṣadaqatin min kasbin ṭayyibin - walā yaqbalu l-lahu ʔillā ṭayyiban - kāna ʔinnamā yaḍaʕuhā fī kaffi r-raḥmani yurabbīhā kamā yurabbī ʔaḥadukum faluwwahu ʔaw faṣīlahu ḥattā takūna miṯla l-jabali.
      Whoever gives handout from good earning – and Allah only accepts the good – it is as if he placed it in the palm of the Merciful to raise it, as one of you raises his foal or young camel until it is like the mountain.
