Etymology

[edit]

The long ā of فَاصُولِيَاء (fāṣūliyāʔ), being unstressed and pre-tonic, has been contracted in dialects. This feeds back into Modern Standard Arabic and causes the vowel not to be written plene. On the other hand, Ottoman Turkish orthography varied here too.
