Etymology

Cognate to Hebrew עָשָׁן (ʿāšān, smoke), Classical Syriac ܬܢܢܐ (tennānā, smoke, steam, fume), maybe originally related to نَتَنَ (natana, to stink) and وَتِين (watīn, aorta), and via contamination from ع ط ر (ʕ-ṭ-r) to Ge'ez ዕጣን (ʿəṭan, incense).
