Borrowed from Old Anatolian Turkish, being a compound of علی ([Imam] Ali) +‎ Old Anatolian Turkish قلی (the possessed form of قل (slave)), literally slave of [Imam] Ali; compare Azerbaijani Əliqulu, Chagatai علی‌قلی, Turkish Alikulu.
