[edit]Borrowed from Old Anatolian Turkish, being a compound of علی (“[Imam] Ali”) + Old Anatolian Turkish قلی (the possessed form of قل (“slave”)), literally “slave of [Imam] Ali”; compare Azerbaijani Əliqulu, Chagatai علیقلی, Turkish Alikulu.
