Gulf Arabic
[edit]Etymology
[edit]عطى (ʕaṭa, “to give”) + عمر (ʕumur, “age, life”).
Pronunciation
[edit]Verb
[edit]- (idiomatic, euphemistic) used to report someone has passed away.
Usage notes
[edit]The verb (عطى) must be conjugated and a pronominal suffix must be attached to its object (عمر) to reflect the gender and number of the person(s) who passed away and the person(s) being spoken to. For example, if a female had died and the news is being told to a male, the correct form would be عطتك عمرها (ʕaṭitik ʕumurha, literally “she gave you (m) her age”).
