Etymology

[edit]

From the root ع ر ق (ʕ-r-q) perhaps in the sense of “exuding” as the plant reminds of tearing eyes with its appearance and has been used for eye treatments, from this idea also English eyebright, eyewort, German Augentrost and the like. Though the ending suggests an Aramaic diminutive in -ōna, related then to the root ע־ר־ק / ܥ-ܪ-ܩ (ʿ-r-q) concerning “flight”, “avoidance”, “to put to flee”, perhaps because of its use to do away with ailments.
