Moroccan Arabic
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Arabic عَلَى ٱلرِّيقِ (ʕalā r-rīqi, “on an empty stomach”). By surface analysis, على (ʕla, “on”) + الريق (er-rīq, “the saliva”), literally “on the saliva”. Compare Maltese għar-riq and Egyptian Arabic عالرايق (ʕar-rāyeʔ).
