Etymology

[edit]

There are two opinions attributed to Al-Asmaʿi. The first one is that it came from Arabic: طَفَل (ṭafal) which mean the arrival of night's darkness, as an analogy to the sudden coming of the uninvited person. The second one is that it came from the proper noun Arabic: طُفَيْل (ṭufayl), a man from Ghatafan tribe who used to be a prominent parasite in Kufa.
