Etymology

Inherited from Old Anatolian Turkish طامو (tamu), from Proto-Turkic *tamu (hell), itself from Sogdian 𐽂𐼺𐼴 (tmw), the accusative form of 𐽂𐼺 (tm, hell). Cognate with Bashkir тамуҡ (tamuq), Kazakh тамұқ (tamūq), Tatar тәмуг (tämuğ), Uyghur تامۇق (tamuq) and Uzbek tamugʻ.
