Etymology
[edit]Uncertain, but seemingly native to the Arabian peninsula; attested in early pre-Islamic inscriptions. Related to the root ش م خ (š m ḵ) meaning "to be lofty", "towering above the rest", "elevated", "coming forth from good stock or roots", and the root ش م ر (š m r) meaning "to be raised up", "to be tucked up", "to be contracted or drawn together together", "to be held together or bunched", "to cut or harvest dates from a tree", "to be fully grown or ready".
