[edit]From Byzantine Greek ἀρχιδιάκονος (arkhidiákonos), ἀρχιδιάκων (arkhidiákōn, “archdeacon”), or a more corrupt colloquial form, compare شُرْطَة (šurṭa) for χ (kh) → ش (š).
