[edit]Borrowed from Old Anatolian Turkish, being a compound of شاه (“shah”) + Old Anatolian Turkish قلی (the possessed form of قل (“slave”)), literally “slave of the Shah”; compare Azerbaijani Şahqulu, Chagatai شاهقلی, Turkish Şahkulu.
