[edit]From Middle Persian 𐭮𐭯𐭠𐭧𐭯𐭲𐭩 (spāhbed), from Proto-Iranian *spādapati-, from Proto-Iranian *cwaHdaHpatiš (“commander of the army”). By surface analysis, سپاه (sepâh, “army”) + ـبد (-bod, “lord, master”).
