Ultimately from Sanskrit शिशुमार (śiśumāra, alligator; river dolphin), from शिशु (śiśu, child) + मार (māra, killing). سوس (sus, (rare) lizard) is a backformation from a reanalysis of the second element as مار (mâr, snake).
