سنگسار
Appearance
Persian
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Henning suggests a possible Sogdian root, citing the Christian Sogdian phrase snqs'r bw - 'to be stoned', where the second element would be the Sogdian directional postposition -sār as seen in words like mrts'r 'hither', 'skys'r 'upward', etc., although qualifying that "it is difficult to say whether [it has] been borrowed either from Persian or Sogdian, or whether [it is] common inheritance in both languages."
Pronunciation
[edit]- (Classical Persian) IPA(key): [sanɡ.ˈsɑːɾ]
- (Iran, formal) IPA(key): [sæɲɡʲ.sɒ́ːɹ]
- (Tajik, formal) IPA(key): [säŋɡ.sɔ́ɾ]
