[edit]From Middle Persian *sandān, whence Classical Persian سندان (sandān), Hebrew סַדָּן (saddān), Aramaic סדנא / ܣܕܢܐ (saddānā). Displaced native عَلَاة (ʕalāh, “anvil”).
