Inherited from Proto-Turkic *semiŕ (fat); cognate with Azerbaijani səmiz, Bashkir һимеҙ (himeź), Chuvash самӑр (samăr), Kazakh семіз (semız), Kyrgyz семиз (semiz), Turkmen semiz, Tuvan семис (semis), Uyghur سېمىز (sëmiz), Uzbek semiz and Yakut эмис (emis).
