From Classical Syriac ܙܢܓܒܝܠ (zangabīl), ܙܢܓܒܝܪ (zangabīr), from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀲𑀺𑀁𑀕𑀺𑀯𑁂𑀭 (siṃgivera), 𑀲𑀺𑀁𑀕𑀯𑁂𑀭 (siṃgavera), from Sanskrit शृङ्गवेर (śṛṅgavera), from Old Tamil 𑀇𑀜𑁆𑀘𑀺 (iñci, ginger) +‎ 𑀯𑁂𑀭𑁆 (vēr, root).
