  1. verbal noun of رَاءَى (rāʔā) (form II), doing a good action only to be seen by others as a good person
    • 609–632 CE, Qur'an, 4:38:
      وَٱلَّذِينَ يُنْفِقُونَ أَمْوَالَهُمْ رِئَاءَ ٱلنَّاسِ وَلَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِٱللّٰهِ وَلَا بِٱلْيَوْمِ ٱلْآخِرِ
      wa-llaḏīna yunfiqūna ʔamwālahum riʔāʔa n-nāsi wa-lā yuʔminūna bi-llāhi wa-lā bi-l-yawmi l-ʔāḵiri
      And those who spend of their wealth to be seen by the people and believe not in God nor in the Day of Judgment.
