- any opaque organism swimming in water and especially if being the non-adult state of an animal, larva in a non-technical sense, a water-insect, tadpole, newt, naiad, diving beetle, etc. [till 9th century, then only unusual learned borrowings]
- Synonym: يَرَقَان (yaraqān)
