Etymology 2
[edit]Most likely from Old South Arabian 𐩭𐩭 (ḫḫ) from which also Ge'ez ኆኅት (ḫoḫət, “door, gate, wall opening”), from which Amharic ኆኅት (ḫoḫət, “space between letters”); also found in Shehri ḫɔh, Mehri ḫā, Soqotri ḥe which there even replaced the Proto-Semitic *pay- (“mouth”), and Biblical Hebrew חוֹחַ (ḥōaḥ, “crevice, fissure; bramble, thicket; hole, hiding place”).
