Etymology

[edit]

Borrowed from Classical Syriac ܚܶܙܦܳܐ (ḵezəpā), ܚܶܨܦܳܐ (ḵeṣəpā, piece of pottery), related to ܚܰܙܽܘܦܳܐ (ḵazūpa, rough), which is a phono-semantic matching of Hittite 𒂁 (ḫarši-, pottery vessel). The Aramaic root is related to حَصَفَ (ḥaṣafa, to twist a rope strongly).
