Persian
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Borrowed from Arabic حَمَاسَة (ḥamāsa, “enthusiasm”), in reference to the Kitāb al-Ḥamāsa or Book of Enthusiasm, a ninth-century collection of early Arabic epic poems. However, the term was coined recently. Classical poets classified poetry according to rhyme rules and not content; all epic poems would then belong to the مثنوی (masnavi) form, but that includes all narrative poems (e.g. romances) and not just epics.[1]
