[edit]From Ottoman Turkish چانطه (çanta, “leather bag, small suitcase”). Cognate with Egyptian Arabic شنطة (šanṭa), Moroccan Arabic شنطة (šanṭa), South Levantine Arabic شنطة (šanṭa).
