Etymology

From Persian تاج خروس (tâj xorus, “amaranth”, literally “cockscomb-like flower”), from Middle Persian [script needed] (hlws /⁠xrōs⁠/, “cock, rooster”, literally “the caller”) + [script needed] (tʾg /⁠tāg⁠/, “crown, tuft, comb”), from its appearance; cognate with Jewish Palestinian Aramaic ירבוז (yarbūz, “strawberry blight”) and Middle Armenian բարբուզան (barbuzan).
