Etymology

From Chagatai تَرْس (ters), ultimate origin is uncertain. Compare Karakhanid تَرْسْ (ters, “any difficult thing”), Turkish ters (“inverse, reverse”), terslik (“inverseness; adversity”), Mongolian тэрс (ters, “dissident; contrary”), Azerbaijani tərs (“contrary, rear, behind, stubborn”).
