      وَكُنْتُ إِذَا سَأَلْتُ ٱلْقَلْبَ يَوْمًا
      تَوَلَّى ٱلدَّمْعُ عَنْ قَلْبِي جَوَابًا
      وَلِي بَيْنَ ٱلضُّلُوعِ دَمٌ وَلَحْمٌ
      هُمَا ٱلْوَاهِي ٱلَّذِي ثَكِلَ ٱلشَّبَابَا
      wakuntu ʔiḏā saʔaltu l-qalba yawman
      tawallā d-damʕu ʕan qalbī jawāban
      walī bayna ḍ-ḍulūʕi damun walaḥmun
      humā l-wāhī llaḏī ṯakila š-šabābā
      And if I asked my heart one day,
      tears would answer instead of my heart
      And I have blood and flesh between my ribs
      They are the weakness which lost my youth
