تَهَجَّدَ (tahajjada) V (non-past يَتَهَجَّدُ (yatahajjadu), verbal noun تَهَجُّد (tahajjud))

  1. to sleep in the night, or in the latter part of the night
  2. to stay up at night, to be awake nocturnally
  3. (Islam) to perform prayer in the night
    • 7th century CE, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, 2:60:
      كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ إِذَا قَامَ لِيَتَهَجَّدَ يَشُوصُ فَاهُ بِالسِّوَاكِ.
      kāna rasūlu l-lahi ʔiḏā qāma li-yatahajjada yašūṣu fā-hu bi-s-siwāki.
      The Prophet, when he stood up for nightly prayer, brushed his teeth with a stick from the toothbrush tree.
