Persian
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Borrowed from a Northwestern Iranian cognate of Manichaean Middle Persian 𐫤𐫗𐫉- (tnz- /tanz-/, “to strain, press”), from Proto-Iranian *tanč- (“to twist (together), become narrow, dense, constrict”), from Proto-Indo-European *tenk- (“to compact”). Akin to Ossetian тындзын (tynʒyn), Old Armenian տանջեմ (tanǰem), Old Georgian ტანჯვა (ṭanǯva), as well as Sanskrit तञ्च् (tañc, “to contract, coagulate”); see the Sanskrit for more cognates.[1]
