Etymology

[edit]

From Hebrew תַּלְמִיד (talmīḏ) and Aramaic תַּלְמִידָא (talmīḏā), from Akkadian 𒊑𒈪𒁺 (talmīdu). Related to Classical Syriac ܬܠܡܝܕܐ (talmīḏā), Ge'ez ተልሚድ (tälmid), تَلْمُود (talmūd), another borrowing from the same Hebrew and Aramaic root.
