[edit]Borrowed from Arabic طَرْخُون (ṭarḵūn), from Ancient Greek δρακόντιον (drakóntion, “edder-wort”). Or from another Iranian language and derived from the cognate to Persian تلخ (talx, “bitter”), compare Dari ترخ, طرخ (tarx, terx), ترخه, طرخه (tarxa, terxa, “any Artemisia”), Pashto ترخه f (tarxa, terxa, “any Artemisia”), homonymic to the feminine of تریخ (trix, “bitter”).
