تَبَرَّأَ (tabarraʔa) V (non-past يَتَبَرَّأُ (yatabarraʔu), verbal noun تَبَرُّؤ (tabarruʔ))

  1. to declare oneself innocent (+مِنْ (min))
  2. to disown, to renounce, to disavow (+مِنْ (min))
    • 609–632 CE, Qur'an, 2:167:
      وَقَالَ الَّذِينَ ٱتَّبَعُوا لَوْ أَنَّ لَنَا كَرَّةً فَنَتَبَرَّأَ مِنْهُمْ كَمَا تَبَرَّءُوا مِنَّا
waqāla llaḏīna ttabaʕū law ʔanna lanā karratan fanatabarraʔa minhum kamā tabarraʔū minnā
And those who were but followers will say: If a return were possible for us, we would disown them even as they have disowned us.
