1. ta', name of the third letter of the Arabic alphabet (ت (t)).
   • a. 1274, Ibn Malik, Alfiyyah, verse 995:

     وَمَا بِتَاءَيْنِ ٱبْتُدِي قَدْ يُقْتَصَرْ / فِيهِ عَلَى تَا كَتَبَيَّنُ الْعِبَرْ

Usage notes

• It can also be called تَاء مَفْتُوحَة (tāʔ maftūḥa, “open taʼ”) or تَاء مَبْسُوطَة (tāʔ mabsūṭa, “flat ta'”) in contrast to its special form تَاء مَرْبُوطَة (tāʔ marbūṭa, “tied taʼ”).
