Etymology 1

Borrowed from Italian borsa (“bag, handbag; stock market”). Doublet of پارسه (parsa, “beggar’s bowl or pouch”), borrowed earlier into a lower register.

Etymology 2

Bursa province

By metathesis from Byzantine Greek Προῦσᾰ (Proûsă), which was probably named after Προυσίας (Prousías), an ancient king of Bithynia.
