[edit]From Middle Persian [script needed] (bwlytn' /burīdan/, “cutting”) originally referring to scrap fabrics packed under a saddlebag; compare Armenian բուրդ (burd, “wool”), Georgian ბურდო (burdo, “chaff”), Sanskrit वर्धक (vardhaka, “shearing, cutting; carpenter”); ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *bʰerdʰ- (“cut”).
