باطية
Arabic
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Borrowed from Aramaic, cognate with Classical Syriac ܒܳܛܺܝܬܴܐ (bāṭīṯā) and Jewish Babylonian Aramaic בָּטִיתָא (bāṭīṯā), with a possible mediary Old Persian *bātah (“wine, must”) from Akkadian 𒁀𒂅𒌑 (baṭû, “tray, platter; mixing container, bowl for liquids; wine jar, pitcher”), from earlier Akkadian 𒁀𒋾𒌝 (baṭium, “vessel, basin, place to hold; tray, platter”) shifting semantically by the Neo-Babylonian period, but consistently an item listed with sets of vessels. Ultimately derived from Proto-Semitic *bvṭ- (“a space or vessel; to be swollen, filled up, slow; to mix, agitate, or gurgle; to be hollow or emptied out, to lose or spread out contents”). Further cognates with Persian بادیه (bâdye, “deep earthen wine-jug”), Persian باده (bâde, “wine”), Ancient Greek βατιάκη (batiákē), Latin batiaca, batioca, batiola.
