Etymology

From Greek γρίπος (grípos) and γρίφος (grífos). Compare also Serbo-Croatian grȋb / гри̃б, a dialect term used at the lake Lake Skadar, in Turkish however also used at the Bosporus, where fishing was largely a Greek business.
